Orchestra
The concerts I worked on are part of my school’s orchestra program, held at the Wilkie Bergmann Theater Performing Arts Center. This isn’t a one-off production. It’s a recurring part of the school’s performing arts calendar, staged three times every year.

The venue and format stay consistent, but each concert brings together a different lineup of student musicians and ensembles. Because a new group of performers is involved each time, the production side has to be rebuilt for every concert: coordinating rehearsal schedules, managing transitions between ensembles, handling sound, and keeping communication clear between musicians and crew.

2024 Winter Concert Rehersal

Over three years, I worked on seven orchestral concerts as stage manager, sound board operator, line editor, and stagehand. The format repeated, but each concert brought different ensembles, musicians, and requirements, so the technical and logistical problems were new every season.

Unlike theater productions, orchestra concerts depend on timing and pacing. I coordinated rehearsal schedules, managed transitions between ensembles, and kept communication clear between musicians, conductors, and technicians. What I learned is that most of a concert’s success comes from details the audience never notices: a transition that takes ten seconds instead of two minutes, a sound level set before the first note, a cue given at the right moment. I learned to anticipate those details and to support performers so they could focus on the music.

Through repeated practice, I learned how to balance audio between different instruments, adapting to changing combinations of ensembles. I also refined my skills in live cue management, quick problem-solving under pressure, and maintaining professionalism in high-stakes environments where mistakes are immediately noticeable.
