Art Show Installation

This exhibition was my mother’s, and my role was to support the technical side of the installation. She provided the artistic vision and guided the overall direction of the display, while I translated her ideas into CAD drafts and contributed design suggestions.

I created a detailed digital layout of the exhibition so we could plan how each piece would occupy the space before installation began. Because she was not accustomed to digital drafting, I became the bridge between her artistic concepts and their technical realization. She would describe how she wanted a piece to feel or where it should be positioned, and I would model it digitally before we reviewed and refined the design together.

Through this process, I developed a deeper appreciation for the importance of artist feedback. Her continuous input not only clarified design decisions but also strengthened the overall concept of the exhibition. Seeing the installation take shape digitally helped us identify opportunities to better express the themes of her work, leading to several changes explored in the following design iterations.

The image on the left shows the original layout proposed by the exhibition organizers. I recreated the design in SketchUp and reworked the space to better reflect the organic qualities of my mother’s artwork.

The original plan focused on displaying larger pieces individually along the walls. While functional, I felt it did not fully capture the immersive, living quality of her work. I proposed suspending smaller ceramic pieces above the viewer to create the feeling of walking through a forest. My inspiration came from the Tree of Souls in Avatar, where hanging forms surround visitors and transform the space itself into part of the artwork.

Because this idea was introduced late in the project, there was not enough time to create the number of hanging pieces needed to fill the area. To solve this problem, I incorporated an infinity mirror effect. Two angled mirrors reflected the suspended pieces repeatedly, multiplying a relatively small number of works into what appeared to be an endless forest. This allowed us to achieve the immersive atmosphere we envisioned while working within the project's constraints.

Beyond the drafting, I also assisted with the physical installation of the work. Working alongside other artist that helped with the installation I utilized their perspectives to amplify the visual aspects.

My role required both technical accuracy and adaptability, as I worked to make sure the final presentation matched her intent while navigating the realities of the gallery space.

This experience highlights my ability to bridge artistic concepts with technical tools, to listen carefully to an artist’s vision, and to contribute hands-on effort in bringing an exhibition to life. It was a rewarding opportunity to support her artistry while applying my own skills in design and installation.

Beyond the drafting and design process, I also helped install the exhibition. Working alongside the other artists and installers, I assisted with positioning sculptures, hanging elements, and mirrors to achieve the intended visual effect within the actual gallery space.

While the digital model provided a strong foundation, the realities of the gallery required constant adjustment. Small changes in the placement of works could significantly affect reflections, sightlines, and the sense of immersion experienced by visitors. We evaluated the installation from multiple viewpoints and refined the arrangement until it matched the vision we had developed during the design phase.

This experience demonstrated how exhibition design extends beyond digital planning. Translating an idea into a physical environment requires collaboration, adaptability, and attention to the viewer’s experience. Supporting my mother’s exhibition allowed me to combine technical design skills with hands-on installation work while contributing to the successful realization of her artistic vision.
